January is in full swing and I'm feeling the joy of de-stashing and creating new things. That goes along perfectly with this week's Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge theme, which is to incorporate recycling. I took my 2018 mini wall calendar and made it into a collage.
I started with my mini wall calendar and a bunch of scraps and leftovers from other projects.
Since the calendar was flimsy, I covered it with white and clear Gesso (white to block out most of the landscape picture and clear to cover the number parts, which I wanted to still have showing). I also stuck on some old book page scraps from my stash.
I'm not going to lie; this looked a little scary. And wavy. Proof that there's a reason we don't use flimsy paper as a base for mixed media projects! But I carried on, stamped some images on deli paper and glued that on. The circles are from a stamp set I designed for inky Antics called Color Wheel. The colored scraps are made with Tim Holtz's Remnants stamp set.
I also glued on some black-and-white patterned paper scraps, then grabbed this cut-up section of an art journal page that went awry.
I finally laid it out okay on the background and while that was drying, I dug through my Tim Holtz paper dolls and found one that I liked for this page. I added a bit of color to the girls with my Prima Oil Pastels and also drew and cut out hats for them. I drew a kite (the "hope" is from another one of my stamp sets- Tiny Houses) and I glued a kite string (embroidery floss) to the girl's hand.
All that was left was to put this thing together. I glued everything down and then had to set the whole thing under two HEAVY books for several hours to try to get that paper to settle down and be flat.
You'll notice also that I added a 425 using Tim Holtz's lowercase Cutout alphabet die. That was part of the address of my childhood home and always has a special place in my heart. And these two girls looked like they'd had some great youthful adventures!
Here are the supplies I used, which you can find at Simon Says Stamp:
I'm excited to see how you interpret our theme this week! Be sure to upload your creations to the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog for your chance to win a $50 voucher to Simon Says Stamp.
